I think the problem is the young teachers.

When I went to school - I lucked out and got all the old hard ass ones. They kept you after school, made you correct your work. You learned.

I had one teacher who was in her 2nd year teaching. The ONLY thing I remember about that entire grade is playtime. That's all we did. oh and a girl lopped off her finger in the window.

Another young teacher somehow kept getting the same student in her class (up here teachers frequently switch years within the schools)

So 5 years go by and he changes schools and they find out the kid is almost illiterate. The teacher never informed the parents and didn't recommend him for help. She just kept passing him in reading and writing.

She didn't lose her job. Just transferred schools.
