Actually with the PS3s they enter a "standby" type state while "off". Uses barely any power and it lets them have a clock that triggers it to wake and check for updates, upload your saves to the "cloud" if you want, etc.

You can actually set it to update on its own late at night or whenever. I did that because I fucking hate waiting on my systems to patch...
