If its an android phone it is rather simple:
Settings, Language and Keyboard, Android Keyboard settings, under Word suggestion settings there are like 3 options.

You should see what it comes up with if you accidentally hit the Esp button!

settings > General > Keyboard > Auto Correction to off for Iphones apparently.
