Former NBA star Dennis Rodman is unable to make his required spousal and child support payments because he is "extremely sick" and "broke," according to court documents filed by his lawyer.
FALLS FROM GRACE
Plenty of athletes have committed epic career blunders. Check out the top sports star screwups.
Rodman, 50, was scheduled to appear before a judge Tuesday in Orange, Calif., for failure to make the payments, the Los Angeles Times reported.
The former NBA badboy owes $808,935 in back child support for the two children — aged nine and 10 — he had with his third wife, Michelle Rodman. He reportedly owes an additional $51,441 in spousal support.
But Rodman's attorney said in court documents that the Basketball Hall of Famer can barely afford his own living expenses, let alone support payments.
"Respondent Dennis Rodman is broke and cannot afford any additional fees," Rodman's attorney Linnea Willis wrote.
Willis claimed Rodman was "extremely sick" and that his marketability was diminishing with age and illness, making it impossible for the five-time NBA champion to pay the $5,000 he owes monthly for one child from another relationship, in addition to the $4,500 he owes Michelle Rodman every month.
Willis added the attorneys representing Rodman have been working pro bono.
A staple of the "Bad Boys" Detroit Pistons squads of the late 1980s, Rodman was known for his flamboyant off-the-court behavior and ever-changing hair color later in his career.
The unheralded second round draft pick out of Southeastern Oklahoma State helped the Pistons to two NBA titles in 1989 and 1990 and took home three more rings with the Chicago Bulls from 1996 to 1998.
Rodman was picked seven times for the NBA All-Defensive First Team and led the league in rebounding for seven straight seasons.
He was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in August.Originally posted by Drew GaraboCpt., with full awareness of your disdain for me, I still have to say that you are making some strong points.
