I am actually going to be scheduling a trip to FL with the wife in December or January. I will be looking for some help from my Floridian forum mates to suggest a good place for a long weekend.

Depends what you want to do. I usually go to the beach here for long weekends and get a hotel. Like on St Pete beach! The Sirata is nice, a little expensive, The Best Western is where I usually stay cuz they always have live bands on the weekends at the beach bar, which is where I spend most of me time.
