Stern's threat to quit Sirius could be empty talk
By DEBORAH YAO (AP) – 2 hours ago
Howard Stern is threatening to leave Sirius XM Radio Inc. now that the shock jock and the satellite radio provider are getting set to enter contract talks in 2010.
That threat probably seems less daunting to Sirius than it once would have. Sirius originally wanted Stern so badly that it gave him the most lucrative radio contract ever, a five-year deal that started in 2006 and paid him $500 million in cash and stock.
Today, he doesn't have many places left to go — at least if he wants another huge payday.
Free radio stations are struggling with steep drops in advertising and high debt loads, and probably can't pay top dollar to get Stern back to the medium where he began. He also likely would chafe at being censored again after enjoying the freedom of satellite radio, where his racy banter hasn't been subject to federal restrictions on language and content.

From what I kinda guess Beth is about to start a few new things. She didn't want to comment on them on the show last week. So - if Howard retires and she doesn't - I can't see that going well...
IF (being a big huge if) Howard wants to do radio still - I see two options for him if he wants to continue to get payed and have the freedom he has now - he can stay with sirius, or start his own radio network and ??? I dunno what platform he could deliver it on - FM seems pointless and pennyless. Launching another satellite company is still outta his price range. Internet radio is jabrone and amateur at best in most cases. (few exceptions) but how much money can he make that way.
What will happen with his on demand deal as well if he leaves sirius? Will TV still want him if he's not a major player anymore? (and what the hell would they show?)COD

I still think internet is the way to go for him, so he can stay semi retired but still put out stuff when he feels like it.

I don't see any optimum option for Howard past this year. In all reality, however, now that I haven't had Sirius for about a year, his name barely comes up anywhere. It's just a fact.
He could go back to regular radio and he could do a show that is constrained and he could get paid a lot of money to do so. The worry on his part has to be if he comes back and fails. The PPM is unforgiving to personalities and it's taken its share of prime talent off the air since its inception.
