Michael Atwell is a midget racer. Actually, he’s a full-sized 10-year-old boy who races midget cars.
At an age when most kids’ competitive experience is limited to the playground, Michael holds nine national championships in his sport, quarter midget racing, and has four national first-place finishes this year, including winning at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
Now retired, Dan Atwell has in effect a full-time job as manager of Michael’s racing, and crew chief for Clem Racing, Inc.
“During race season, it’s 10 hours a day,” said Dan Atwell. “I spend a lot of time in that trailer.”
The owner of Clem Racing is Bubba Clem, known as “Bubba the Love Sponge” on his syndicated radio show. Clem’s son Tyler is the other driver for Clem Racing.
“I met Dan at the Tampa quarter midget track about three and a half years ago,” said Clem. “I approached Dan about teaming up under the name Clem Racing. I’m so thankful to have found one of the elite quarter midget crew chiefs practically in my backyard.”
