Grunge was "heavier" on the whole than hair metal, I will give you that. I'm a huge Grunge fan, but most of the better stuff (The Meat Puppets, Soundgarden, Blind Melon, Mother Love Bone) wasn't that heavy. I guess it depends on what you consider Grunge also.
