So is this smoking method safe? Regular tobacco cigarettes are known to cause serious health problems and you should know that smoking hookah tobacco is no safer. It is in fact worse for the user. Many believe that the water in the hookah filters out all of the "bad stuff," but this simply isn't true. Even after passing through water, the smoke produced still contains high levels of toxic compounds like carbon monoxide, heavy metals and carcinogens. It also exposes the user to significant levels of nicotine. Recent studies indicate that hookah smokers inhale more nicotine than cigarette smokers because of the amount of smoke that is being inhaled. A typical one-hour session of hookah smoking exposes the user to 100 to 200 times the volume of smoke inhaled from smoking a single cigarette.
