I just lost so much stuff I had as a kid. Old games books and movies that it has made me want to preserve all this media for my daughter. I even got cart dumpers for consoles so I could make images of my games. That way my daughter can play the original super mario bros. even if it has to be with a 360 gamepad on a computer.
edit: Forgot to mention specifically that I also bin up books so they won't get ruined by the elements, got a nice collection of "important" books, then some of my personal favorites.

Well I bought some cart dumpers from a local guy that makes them, but basically you take a card reader or device of that type and rig it up to read that port type, taking the connector from the GBA or whatever system. There are utilities and cart dumpers online for this process but it might be easier to just download the games that you want backups of, as most people have already done the job for you.
