By the way SJ, there is a bunch of kayfabe (even now) involved with the history of Vader's mask. He was originally supposed to be "Big Bang Vader", basically a rip off of Darth Vader. Somehow that morphed into Big Van Vader. So the idea early on was that he always wore his mask like Darth Vader in the Star Wars movies.
