Kids these days have to meet goals set by others, not their own. It's tremendous pressure. Wouldn't it be better to set goals and if you don't meet them, temper the results and approach it differently?

Not here. That is what I taught my kids. Set ur own goals and go for them. make them reasonable but hard to reach. It's all up to you.
