why don't we sue the record industry for not inventing a piracy free medium to distribute their shit on?

They failed to stay with the times. They choose to not change the format and leave it being distributed on a highly vulnerable format. They couldn't stop it on records once tapes came along... so I mean technically you can still record a cd to a tape Where's the lawsuits to the tape cassete makers?

You are legally allowed to make a back up copy of any medium you own

including Nintendo cartridges and floppy disks, cd's and records. Even magazines and newsprint I believe.

That local band guy is way off base. I'm pretty sure most up and coming bands don't care how you listen, just get exposure. It's not until their popular that they care.
