Back in late 1998 I worked at a pawn shop and in walks this tall lanky dude. He puts out his hand and pulls off what looks like a class ring. He hands me the ring and I take a look at it and it's a 1996 Olympic boxing silver medal ring. Our policy was to not take in rings like that but I said fuck it. I first asked him why he would want to pawn something this sentimental and he said he only needed money to "get him across the bridge" to St. Pete. I then asked him how much he needed. He said he only needed 50 bucks. I gave him the loan and told him that if he didn't come back to pick it up I was buying it myself. He said he was on his way to become a pro fighter and a future champ and I believed him. A few days later he came back and got the ring and did eventually become a champ. That guy was none other than Antonio Tarver.
