It's not illegal to own a full auto, you just have to pay the price of the gun (usually very high) plus the NFA stamp & paperwork fees(about a 6 month wait) and its yours.

You have to buy it from a class 3 firearms dealer but any jobber can own a full auto or silencer, but most don't know that.
Oh and mine is a regular civilian model M4
