Default Beth Stern's Book Reviews

this one was the best !
This review is from: Oh My Dog: How to Choose, Train, Groom, Nurture, Feed, and Care for Your New Best Friend (Paperback)
In the coming days, there will be a lot of negative reviews about this book which on the surface may seem biased but it really is absolutely understandable.

I'll tell you why.

Despite writing this book, the author is NOT an authority on dog care - not by any stretch of the imagination. This book is simply a vanity project by a bored trophy wife of a millionaire.

That in itself is not necessarily a bad thing if the author practices what she preaches. Unfortunately that is not the case here.

The author preaches about adopting animals from a shelter but her dog (yes, the one on the book cover) was bred and trained by a professional breeder. She has no clue what it takes to train a dog.

She speaks of nutrition but her dog is the fattest bulldog I have ever seen. Her husband even speaks about her feeding the dog table scraps which ANYBODY will tell you is a bad thing. You don't even have to be a specialist to know that.

On top of all that, she employs a professional dog walker to walk her dog.

With no practical or usable knowledge on this topic, the author makes it clear that she spoke to specialists and animal experts to compile data for her book. I must ask WHY are we paying to read someone's book report that might have gotten a C+ in high school? WHY are we not purchasing a dog care book from a specialist that has worked with dogs professionally?

Simply put, is this really someone that you want to get dog care information from? Would you take a car to someone that has no experience fixing cars? Would you get a medical exam from someone that has talked to doctors but has no actual experience with medicine?

It wouldn't make any sense what-so-ever. Just as it wouldn't make sense to get dog care advice from someone that knows NOTHING about dogs but is simply and shamelessly using animals for her own self gain.

Also as per my understanding, a portion of the revenue generated by this book will be used to support the North Shore Animal League (NSAL), one of the nation's LEAST efficient animal charities. With a fundraising efficiency of 23.6% ($23.60 of every $100 actually goes towards their cause) and a CEO that banks $354,879 annually, DO NOT support this book and its associated charity.

Dog care is not a new topic. There are so many good books written by qualified professionals out there. Do your research for the sake of your beloved dog and buy another book.

NOTE: Every "questionable" statement that I've made here can be traced back to the Howard Stern show, which her husband is the host of. He vents about his daily life and has talked about his wife, her book and their dog on many occasions. The truth cannot be denied. http://www.amazon.com/Oh-My-Dog-Choo...owViewpoints=1
