That must have really been off the wall shit back then. Nowadays you have clowns like Rodman and famous people trying to cash in but andy really loved it.

Man, I loved WCW. It's amazing Flair and Piper performed as well as they did at that age. I remember most of my friends being into WWF back then and saying all of WCW's stars were old, but Ric Flair was the best at any age. I kind of wish Sting hadn't finally gone with the WWE, it's no fun if everybody ends up working for Vince.

The Minneapolis Wrestling Club is a 16mm documentary film about four old-school, Midwestern professional wrestlers. With roots in vaudeville and the carnival sideshow, early professional wrestlers were a rare combination of athlete, circus performer and thug.
Featuring: Joe Snyder, "The Texas Midget", Sodbuster Kenny Jay, Stan "Krusher" Kowalski, and Eddie Sharkey.
Directed by John Lightfoot

Love this video so much. At the time it was part of the nWo arrival that turned out to go to utter shit when Hogan turned face and Hall was canned due to him being Hall. I'm a big fan as well, especially of some of his TNA stuff. The WWE really misused him (that rap battle with Cena, I mean come on) and I don't think TNA really gave him a chance to shine either. He may end up being another guy who has a better career in Japan/in the indies. Funny enough, most of my favorite wrestlers are that way (especially Vader), it's probably why I like him.

SJ, I was thinking more about that Vader interview. One of the things he brought up was that he thought WCW would have been better off in the long run had they never brought in Hogan and turned it into a more WWE-like product. Looking back, they did have a great stable with him, Sting, Ric Flair, Sid Vicious, etc. Then again, I don't know that they would have ever hit NWO era-like numbers with those guys. Interesting to consider, though.

see back when I was younger, I didn't know wcw was another "promotion" so much as a minor leagues for the wwf

We used to get those old early 90's wcw shows and it just seemed like the good young guys got picked up by wwf and the old washups went back to the minors aka wcw...

so looking back, I dunno how the general public aka a casual fan (not a smark) would have reacted to the wcw copying the wwe.

The other thing is - you wouldn't have had the attitude era at all. I mean it would have just stayed the cartoony bullshit for kids and you'd have 2x that if wcw followed suit.

I think wcw taking hogan was a good move for the industry in the long run. It opened the eyes to the higher ups that it wasn't just for kids and kids didn't spend as much money as a 20+

I'm with you on that SJ, I just wanted to mention that I didn't clarify what Vader said very well. Basically, what he was saying is this: WCW should have kept developing their stable of guys pre-Hogan and Bischoff (Vader, Sting, Flair, Sid Vicious, etc.) and keep going with that more traditional, rasslin' style show. That would have let WWE keep doing the cartoony, image oriented stuff that wasn't focused on mechanics or athleticism (which he shits on Hogan for exemplifying), he wasn't saying that WCW should become like the WWE in that regard. You are right about his opinion of the Attitude era stuff though, he's really big on a Japanese shoot style of wrestling (even with cartoony stuff). I hope that made sense. The later half of that interview is pretty interesting though, definitely worth another watch.

TelegramSam

Also, just talking about WCW, I think a lot of people in the US felt the same way you did. It really depends on where you're from, I think if you grew up with the NWA and old school Starrcade you saw them as an equal promotion. If you were from Vince Sr.'s old territory, or anywhere that only got wrestling via cable (and not OTA), you saw WCW as this weird minor league promotion. I remember Abe Kanan saying on his show (I listened a few times :jj: ) that he was in that boat, but would get NWA/WCW VHS tapes at the video store. To him, it was this weird minor league thing he'd never heard of, so I get where you're coming from with that.

ok so... I'm kinda confused about one of his points

they DID keep developing a lot of that talent :jj: Think about it this way - Only vader got the shaft there... Sting.. HUGE. Flair - Space fucking mountain. Sid - broke his leg... so he doesn't factor in and really sid wasn't too far off from hogan in ability :jj:

WCW didn't drop a lot of guys either. Mainly the roster just grew. I think back in the heyday both companies had between 50 and 80 guys or something crazy. It was WAY overpopulated really in both companies.

SJ
09-24-2014, 07:17 PM
problem with wcw is the leadership kept changing and they just added too many guys and it got out of control...

if they could erase the last year (or maybe two) of wcw, they probably could have saved it. They should have stepped in and dissolved all "factions"

Sleazy E should have double crossed the NWO's, gone back to being the corporate stooge and re-focus the writing but russo came in and ugh... JJ had his hand in the cookie jar and Kevin Nash fucked things up pretty good before that booking wise. The goldberg thing was bullshit. I know he takes a lot of heat, but fuck it - he had HUGE momentum. You don't fuck with that and they did and blew having their new angle being just everyone trying to take down goldberg...

By the way, going back to the earlier Kaufman stuff I posted, this is probably my all time favorite "wrestling" video. Andy Kaufman did an interview with Freddie Blassie, called "My Breakfast With Blassie". Now, on its face Andy just loved Blassie. The brilliance of this video is that it's actually a commentary on modern philosophy and "intellectuals", if that makes sense.

See, this is a parody of an art film that critics love to hold up as brilliant, My Dinner With Andre. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/My_Dinner_with_Andre Siskel and Ebert even called it film of the year. The thing is, if you watch it, it is (in Andy's opinion at least) a bunch of pretentious bullshit sold to people who want to think they're smarter than they are so they can feel validated. In other words, it's a work. If you remember what Jerry Lawler told Stone Cold about Andy, it was that he never considered himself a comedian or an actor, he was a performer who never broke kayfabe in order to get a reaction.

So anyway, I think this film is about as philosophical as wrestling gets, and it doesn't get credit for being as brilliant as it is. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9nm-VKy4HUs

SJ, I wanted to post this to help you figure out how heels/faces work in Japanese wrestling. It's an article about how important manners and social order are in Japan. http://www.bbc.com/news/magazine-29429742
Here's a quick highlight, the whole thing is worth reading: "Basically, Japanese people are very law-abiding. We have been taught not to swim when there are no lifeguards," he says. "Same with traffic lights. You don't see many people jaywalk here do you?"

It's true. Even along car-free country lanes, people tend to wait patiently for the cross signal.

What happens on 1 September is that lifeguards vanish, because local authorities pull them from the beaches and close all amenities. Summer-season beach bars and restaurants are also meekly dismantled.

"Many of us are so submissive to authority that we will never think to challenge the status quo," says Sato.

Indoctrination starts at school. Children are drilled: "Follow the rules. Don't be selfish. The nail that sticks out gets hammered down."

They learn that custom decreed long ago that autumn (the time you halt beach trips and instead do autumny things) returns at midnight on 31 August precisely. Only a barbarian would be foolish enough to disregard "correct behaviour" that has been established over generations by broad consent.

"Most Japanese are very conscious of the 'four seasons' and what they should do for each season," another Tokyoite and beach lover, Yukiko Oono, tells me.

So you can see why the Bullet Club cheating (putting their feet on the ropes for leverage, interfering in matches, etc.) pisses them off so much. This also shows how unbelievable Vader's debut in the Sumo Hall was. Japanese people refuse to even jaywalk; if you get them to burn their pillows and trash up the place GNR concert style, you are a fucking legend.

StevieRayMog

Don't think so, but I have purposely not gone back and re-watched much of the Russo/Ferrara era so maybe I'm wrong. Fingerpoke of Doom was when the nWo merged together and the fans got a bullshit finish for a main event.

Best part of one of my all time favorite shoots. Just a fascinating look at the clusterfuck that was (and by many accounts still is) TNA.

Sweet. Love stuff like this. MLW's "History in the Making" has been doing something similar.

Oh god they actually aired that? His campaign signed off on it?

Also, what "experience?" Not even trying to be snarky but he should say what his qualifications are rather than a rib of a commercial referencing his wrestling past.
