It’s been five years since Sirius lured shock jock Howard Stern to satellite radio with a $500 million contract. Whether Stern can re-up with a similar deal when his contract expires at the end of next year is anyone’s guess, but it ought to be entertaining. Sirius XM CEO Mel Karmazin is preparing himself for negotiations with the self-proclaimed King of All Media.
I could tell you, it will start with Howard feeling that he is working too hard and doing too many shows and not making enough money. Our side would say, ‘We want you to do more, and get less money,’” Karmazin said.
http://blogs.reuters.com/summits/2009/11/30/sirius-ceo-karmazin-limbers-up-for-the-howard-stern-dance/
I can say one thing - they better sign him quick and start advertising that he's staying as soon as they can.

I can say one thing - they better sign him quick and start advertising that he's staying as soon as they can.
And if he does want to move the show later in the day and/or fewer days, they better start looking at talent ::cough: Bubba :cough:: to fill some hours.
Anything less than he Howard is doing now is not enough to fill an entire channel.

I couldn't imagine him wanting to move to a different daypart. 20 some odd years at the same shift. The change would freak me the fuck out. Yeah, sure you get to sleep in(if you can), but now your workday isn't over until 7 o'clock. For me it would be too much of a drastic change.:turborun:
I see howard doing 10-2...
don't ask me why but that's where I see him, if he is to switch times...
Howards always said that morning drive was the best slot for ratings - but sirius doesn't have ratings... so his argument for staying in mornings is moot

GHARIB: Howard Stern has been a very positive force for Sirius and I under that his contract expires next year. Is he going to re-up and what happens next?
KARMAZIN: Howard has been a very significant performer for us. He has to decide on whether or not he wants to continue. If he does, I would be doing everything I can to work out financial arrangements that are in our shareholders' best interests to do a deal with Howard.
GHARIB: Can you afford to keep continuing to pay top dollar for people like Howard Stern or Martha Stewart giving the economics of this business?
KARMAZIN: Over my entire career, I've always heard that content is expensive. Well, yeah, contempt is very expensive and if you want to have great content, whether it be the NFL or whether or not it be Howard Stern, you have to pay for it. And my business model is always that I'd rather figure out a way to make money with the talent rather than not have them and compete against them.

The writing seems to be on the wall, at least to me. At the end of next year he'll take less money for a lighter schedule. He sure as hell isn't working any more.

NEW YORK, Dec 7 (Reuters) - A customer of Sirius XM Radio Inc (SIRI.O) sued the U.S. satellite radio company on Monday, saying it deceptively increased prices in breach of subscriber contracts.
The lawsuit, filed in Manhattan federal court, said that since a July 2008 merger of Sirius and rival XM Satellite Radio, the only two satellite radio providers in the United States, monthly charges had risen by nearly 30 percent for certain subscribers with multiple accounts.
"Since the merger, Sirius XM has abused its monopoly power by increasing prices above competitive levels, breaching subscriber contracts, and making false and misleading statements to subscribers and the public," said the complaint by Carl Blessing, a resident of Florida, who is seeking class action status and unspecified damages.

Depends on the interpretation of when they are allowed to start the calculation of when the increases in royalties start. They charged far more than the rates increased since the merger.
I really hope that guy wins

Starting on February 9th, DirecTV subscribers will find that their XM satellite radio channels will have disappeared - and have been replaced with channels from SonicTap (http://www.sonictap.com/), according to DirecTV's website.
Now, why is this more strange than "the usual" content distribution deal gone bad?
For one thing, Liberty Media (which has a 40 percent stake (http://www.orbitcast.com/archives/breaking-sirius-xm-radio-and-liberty-media-reach-530-million-agreement.html) in Sirius XM Radio Inc.) also owns DirecTV - so you think there would be a baked in partnership between the two. But not so.
On February 29th, 2010, SonicTap will be the new source of music for 18 million DirecTV subscribers. The lineup of genres will remain relatively the same - but with one exception.
The one large notable difference is that there's some 10 more Hispanic music channels added in addition to the other channels. Could this have been the deciding factor for the change? It's hard to say for sure, but I can't imagine why both Liberty-owned companies would part ways unless there was a clear differentiator between the two.
Then again, who knows what kind of reasoning is behind the switch. It would be nice to see some level of transparency to explain to subscribers why exactly the change is happening... but I'm not holding my breath.

NEW YORK, Jan. 14 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- SIRIUS XM Radio (Nasdaq: SIRI) today announced the results of an Arbitron study of satellite radio subscribers conducted in October and November 2009 that found listenership is larger than previously estimated and scores much higher on key demographic criteria compared to the general population and AM/FM radio listeners.
Arbitron's study showed that more than 35 million total adult listeners tune in to SIRIUS XM, 32 million of which are weekly listeners.
The study found SIRIUS XM listeners prefer satellite radio over other audio options available to them. Respondents indicated that the percent of total time spent listening to audio in general is 62% to SIRIUS XM, 16% to AM/FM, 4% to streaming internet, and 10% of the time using mobile devices.

Wow is all I can say (if this is true).
British comedian Russell Brand has been offered a multi-million dollar deal to join American radio station Sirius.
Russell Brand is being lined up to host his own radio show in America.
Satellite station Sirius Radio broadcasts shows by some of the biggest names in the US, including controversial shock jock Howard Stern, Eminem and Jamie Foxx, and bosses are now keen to add Russell to the roster.
Sirius have reportedly offered the 'Get Him to the Greek' star a deal "worth millions of dollars" to hit the American airwaves.
A source told The Sun newspaper: "Russell has been itching to get back on radio for a while now. He has been off doing other things but radio still really tickles him."
The source continued "Russell's sidekick Matt Morgan is also keen to get writing and broadcasting again. The Sirius deal is in its infancy but Russell is well up for it. He has been given the hard sell about how they could make him the new Howard Stern."

(Reuters) - Sirius XM Radio on Wednesday posted better-than expected quarterly revenue, citing a sharp jump in subscribers to its pay-radio service and customers' desire for premium programing.
The company, run by media industry veteran Mel Karmazin, nudged its full-year revenue estimate up to $2.8 billion from $2.7 billion, after it added 583,000 net subscribers in the second quarter.
Revenue in the second quarter rose 16 pct to $699.7 million, beating analysts' average estimate of $691.4 million, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

Today during the Sirius XM Radio Inc. Q2 earnings call, CEO Mel Karmazin announced that they will be launching "Satellite Radio 2.0" in retail stores for the 2011 holiday season.
"Our next generation of satellite radios are expected to offer more choices for the consumer and contain functionality that does not exist today."
There were little specifics other than that the new satellite radio receivers are expected to be allowing for more channels and more capacity.
Sirius XM seemed very optimistic of the new initiative, adding that they will help to improve sales at the retail level.

Our next generation of satellite radios are expected to offer significantly more choices for the consumer and contain functionality that does not exist today in our radios. There will not be any significant increase in our costs, to bring these radios to consumers and we expect to have the first satellite radio 2.0 products in retail stores by the holiday season in the fourth quarter of 2011.

Sirius XM Chief Executive Mel Karmazin said he remains optimistic about signing a new deal to keep Howard Stern on the satellite radio service, but warned that should the shock jock bolt, some subscribers might leave with him.
Speaking at the Bank of America/Merrill Lynch Media, Communications & Entertainment Conference, Karmazin praised Stern, with whom he's worked closely for decades.
"He's been a fabulous partner ... he has enabled companies to make a lot of money," Karmazin said. Stern's current contract expires at the end of the year, and he has, as he always does when one of his deals is nearing expiration, been dropping hints on his show that it may be time to walk away. Basically they are pushing some debt out 5 years with the hopes that the rate will be better later.
I think this is the first time I've seen separate numbers since the merger.
Between the two services, XM remains the larger player. XM's 10.2 million subscribers top the 9.6 million at Sirius -- but the gap continues to close. As long as Sirius doesn't lose Howard Stern in December, Sirius should overtake XM at some point next year.

Sirius XM Radio Inc. is exploring programming alternatives in case the satellite broadcaster and talk-show host Howard Stern aren’t able to agree on a new contract, Chief Executive Officer Mel Karmazin said.
Stern, whose five-year, $500 million contract expires in December, is continuing to negotiate with the New York-based company and a resolution will come before the end of the year, Karmazin, 67, said in an interview yesterday. Sirius XM stations, such as Raw Dog Comedy and Playboy Radio, would help retain many of Stern’s listeners if he left, he said.
“There’s no deal,” Karmazin said. “The only announcement will be when there is a deal, or there’s not a deal. And I’m hopeful there will be a deal.”

So much for the Stern announcement being made during the Q3 results.
As for Spice Radio...whatever. At least it shows they aren't trying to sanitize the medium any time soon.
Spice Radio coming to Sirius.
Interesting line-up.

Just like Howard predicted.
NEW YORK (AP) — Talk show host Laura Schlessinger won't stay away from radio very long — only a weekend, in fact.
Sirius XM Radio said Monday it has a multiyear deal with Schlessinger to bring her "Dr. Laura" advice program to satellite radio in January. Specific terms were not revealed.
Schlessinger had said in August she was quitting her syndicated radio program, a week after she apologized for using the N-word on the air 11 times while talking to a black woman, and activists demanded her ouster.
She ends her traditional radio program on Friday, Dec. 31. The following Monday, she starts at Sirius.
Just like Howard predicted.
:haha: I had a feeling this would happen.

Richard Pryor would have celebrated his 70th birthday this month, so in his honor Sirius XM will launch Richard Pryor Radio, a four-day uncensored channel devoted to the comedian's decades of groundbreaking work (and profane language).
Richard Pryor Radio will launch Dec. 30 at 5:00 am ET and will run through 11:59 pm ET on Jan. 2 on SIRIUS channel 108 and XM channel 139. The channel will feature hundreds of tracks from live concert performances, stand-up gigs and comedy albums spanning 1968-1992.

Fans of Rosie O'Donnell won't have to go cold turkey on Sirius XM Radio (Nasdaq: SIRI ) .
The last live installment of Rosie Radio is coming on June 1, but the comedienne's new talk show gig on television will also make its way to satellite radio.
O'Donnell is moving to Oprah Winfrey's OWN this fall. The daily talk show -- Rosie -- will air on Sirius and XM the same day it airs on the struggling cable network.
Will Sirius XM listeners feel cheated? We don't know how many listeners migrated to satellite radio to catch the 2009 debut of Rosie Radio. Those that did are unlikely to be satisfied with non-exclusive broadcasts of a television show. Premium radio and hand-me-down content aren't compelling bedfellows.

As SiriusXM satellite radio celebrates a record number of subscribers, some listeners are threatening to jump ship over recent changes that merged Willie Nelson's channel with another country station.
A shuffling of the lineup Wednesday, designed to put most broadcasts in the same spot on both the Sirius and XM systems, brought an end to Willie's Place. It was combined with the Roadhouse, leading to the creation of Willie's Roadhouse, found on channel 56. While the names sound similar, fans insist the music played is not.

There is new news in the Howard Stern suit against Sirius XM, and it is quite interesting. The company admits that many facts alleged by Stern, Buchwald, and One Twelve media are indeed accurate, and contends that the suit centers on one pivotal issue. That issue is whether XM subscribers should be counted in the numbers tied to the performance section of the contract with Stern. According to Sirius XM that answer is a resounding NO.
The company did pay Stern $25 million, and Buchwald $2.5 million when the merger with XM was completed, a fact that perhaps most investors were not aware of. The crux of this case centers on how the term “Sirius Subscribers” is defined according to the company. It is Sirius XM’s contention that XM subscribers would not be counted under the Sirius umbrella with or without the merger.

As much as I side with Howard here, I can also see their argument.
Me too, except for one thing. Without Howard, there is no acquisition of XM. Sirius fails and falls by the wayside, leaving XM as the only remaining satellite radio company.
I'm guessing there will be a handsome settlement, the lawsuit will go away, and Howard will enjoy his even shorter work weeks until he shuts down the show as we know it after this contract.
look they paid the guy 25 mil for making the merger happen - therefore I think they owe him the XM numbers...

I agree, but I understand why Sirius XM would contest that fact rather than fold and pay Howard right away. I certainly don't think it's the right thing to do.
